Burglars locked door of property behind them after taking cars

A victim of a double car theft from a Longford property said he "felt numb" after burglars broke into his partner's property while the couple were sleeping.

The shocking discovery was made on Monday morning by Matthew Cappell that both his BMW 3 Series and an Audi A1, belonging to his girlfriend Louise Phipps, were stolen overnight.

Burglars smashed a window to the rear of the Alder Road dwelling before taking keys to the vehicles and driving off with them - then locking the door behind them.

"People are going to read this and think 'Ah well if they've got a BMW and an Audi, they've got loads of money, but that's not the case," said 31-year-old Mr Cappell.

"I pay for that car every month. I don't have loads of money. It's my one luxury and I work hard for it, now it's gone. So has my girlfriend's car too."
'It could've ended up a lot worse'

The carpentry and joinery lecturer at Warwickshire College was getting ready for work when he realised what had occurred overnight.

"I came downstairs and saw a back window of the house had been put in," said Mr Cappell, who is also head coach at Old Wheatleyans Rugby Club.

"I then looked out of the front window and both mine and Louise's car were gone. Weirdly, I feel lucky in one sense. If two cars have gone then there must have been two if not three people breaking in. If I'd have heard them and come downstairs, it could've ended up a lot worse.

"I'm just numb to it really. They locked the front door behind them too so I guess if we'd have heard them, we couldn't have got to them. We've had to have the locks changed because of that which is another thing we've got to sort."

Miss Phipps' handbag and Mr Cappell's wallet were also taken during the break-in.
