Piles of rotting rubbish have left residents of a road in Stoke battling flies and a stomach churning stench after bags were left by departing students, it has been claimed.

Bolingbroke Road, at its west end onto Humber Road, had a pavement covered in overflowing wheelie-bins, split bags and rubbish lying on the road.

The city councillor for Lower Stoke, John McNicholas, told residents: "This has been reported, on many occasions, both to the council and the university.

"There is a student protocol in place that should be dealing with this."

The manager of B's Batches sandwich shop at 27 Humber Road, Daniel Pastusiak, said: “The smell, the flies, it is all affecting our business – the smell is so bad.

"I have been in touch with Coventry Council, but they do nothing.

"There is lots of rubbish piled up for weeks, the council said they would take action, but all that happened was environmental health came round and put stickers on the bags.

"One street cleaner came, took a look that it was too much for one person and left again.

“I have had to try sort it myself.”

“The problem is the students – they have the bins but the rubbish is on the street, they don't even know how to use a bin.

"The landlords are taking the rent for themselves and not providing enough bins.

"They should be paying business rates for bins with the amount of rubbish that is there.”

Cllr McNicholas confirmed to CoventryLive that the bags had now been cleared away, after residents contacted him and the council rapid street team.
