Reports that Jaguar Land Rover is set to axe 1,000 jobs in Solihull

It has been reported that some 1,000 workers at the Solihull plant will not be having their contracts renewed

A significant number of Jaguar Land Rover workers in the Midlands could be set to lose their jobs, with reports today saying that some 1000 workers will not be getting their contracts renewed.

Temporary workers in Solihull have been told that they will not be kept on, with the motoring giants blaming Brexit and the fall in demand for diesel models for their decision.

The news was first reported by ITV's Business Editor Joel Hills earlier today, who Tweeted: " Jaguar Land Rover is set to cut production and jobs following a slump in sales. Formal announcement will be made on Monday. I’m told around 1,000 roles will be affected and that JLR will blame Brexit and sharp fall in demand for diesel."

It is believed that these roles will be at the JLR plant in Solihull, and not Coventry. The company employs thousands of both full-time and agency workers at sites across the West Midlands including its head office in Coventry, Castle Bromwich, Wolverhampton and Solihull.

Earlier this year, JLR said it would temporarily reduce production at its plant in Halewood, Merseyside, in response to weakening demand due to Brexit and tax hikes on diesel cars.

Following the reports of potential job losses, Jaguar Land Rover told CoventryLive: "As is standard business practice, Jaguar Land Rover regularly reviews its production schedules to ensure market demand is balanced globally.

"On Monday we will be cascading our production plans for the next fiscal year to our workforce.

"In light of the continuing headwinds impacting the car industry, we are making some adjustments to our production schedules and the level of agency staff.

"We are not renewing TEMPORARY contracts of a number of agency staff at Solihull."

Blaming Brexit is rather naughty.

JLR have made some very poor strategic decisions over recent years. Sadly, they are now reaping what they have sown. They are still making the same mistakes that bedeviled BMC and British Leyland.

I stand by my previous comments about poor strategic decisions by JLR...

Jaguar Land Rover announces £264m quarterly pre-tax loss

JAGUAR Land Rover has announced a pre-tax loss of £264million in the first three months of the financial year amid a tariff slash in China and Brexit.

The loss has been attributed to falling wholesales and higher China incentives.

The luxury car manufacturer announced 131,560 wholesales – down 5 per cent year-on-year – which chief executive professor Dr Ralf Speth blamed on the announcement of the import duty reduction in China.

It sold around 145,000 vehicles – up 5.9 per cent on the previous year – but due to wholesale performance overall revenues slumped.

Revenues for the quarter were £5.2billion, 6.7 per cent lower year-on-year.

Import duty has been slashed from 25 per cent to 10 per cent in China in a bid to open up its economy.

Import duty is a tax collected on imports and some exports by a country’s customs authorities.

Prof Dr Speth said: “We had a pre-tax loss in the first quarter, reflecting the impact of the announcement of the duty reduction in China as well as planned dealer stock reductions in the quarter.

“We also continue to be impacted negatively by uncertainty over diesels in Europe along with Brexit and additional diesel taxes in UK.

“Given these issues, we will remain focused on driving growth and simultaneously reducing costs and boosting operational efficiency and capability, taking the necessary steps to shape our future.

“We expect sales and financial results to improve over the remainder of the financial year, driven by continued ramp-up of new models, most recently the electric Jaguar I-PACE, and with the new lower duties effective in China.”

Prof Dr Speth warned in July ‘a bad Brexit deal’ could cost the company more than £1.2billion a year and put more jobs at risk.

Despite this, the company says it continues to invest over proportionally in new vehicles, automotive technologies and facilities to support its future sustainable growth, with total investment spending of £1.1billion for the quarter.

This investment spending of £1billion led to negative operating cash flow of £1.7billion.

The company says it plans to invest in the region of £4.5 billion in the current financial year.

It announced in June it was set to move all production of its Discovery model from Solihull to a new factory in Slovakia.

It also warned of potential job losses as a result of the shift.

As we reported in April, around 1,000 agency staff were told they would be losing their jobs at JLR’s Lode Lane plant in Solihull.

It also confirmed 350 permanent workers were to be transferred from its Castle Bromwich facility to Lode Lane.

Jaguar Land Rover job losses as Solihull gears-up for Slovakia switch

Staff at Jaguar Land Rover’s Lode Lane plant face huge changes as the company begins the countdown to switching production of its Discovery model from Solihull to Slovakia.

The Coventry car maker has announced “changes to its production schedule” with workers consulted today on what that will mean.

Hundreds of agency staff at Solihull will lose their jobs, while some permanent staff working on the Discovery model will be given the option of voluntary redundancy.

The changes are part of a programme to move Discovery production to the car maker’s recently-opened Slovakian factory in Nitra.

The programme will also see the Solihull plant reconfigured to produce the next generation Range Rover and perhaps other models too, as the firm moves towards an electric future.

A spokesman for Jaguar Land Rover told CoventryLive the reduction in the number of agency workers was “the balance” of a planned reduction of 1,000 announced in the spring but that there would be several hundred additional agency jobs going - due to slowing global sales.

The spokesman did not confirm further details regarding voluntary redundancy but said such a “voluntary leavers programme” was customary when production of a vehicle ends, as was the case when Defender production ceased.

Sadly, all too predictable.

JLR needs to be about half the size it is with current sales volumes. The management haven't learned from the mistakes made by BL in the 60s/70s.

Jaguar Land Rover set to cut thousands of jobs in new year
Up to 5,000 positions to go as Britain’s largest carmaker rolls out £2.5bn cost savings plan

Jaguar Land Rover will announce plans to cut thousands of jobs early in the new year, as part of a £2.5bn turnround plan to revive the fortunes of Britain’s largest carmaker.

JLR, which employs 40,000 people in the UK, has been stung by sliding demand for diesel, poor sales in China and costs of preparing for Britain’s departure from the EU.

In October, after posting a loss of £90m for the three months to September, it outlined plans to find savings of £2.5bn, including £1bn of cost reductions within 18 months, without specifying how many jobs would be lost.

During January the company will outline the short-term part of its plan, which will include job losses that run into the thousands, according to several people close to the company.

The group has already shed 1,000 roles at its flagship plant in Solihull, and reduced working hours at other sites amid falling demand for its diesel vehicles and saloon cars.

Analysts are pencilling in up to 5,000 roles that may be lost, as the business is forced to take an axe to its workforce in order to survive.

Jaguar Land Rover confirms 4,500 more job losses

JAGUAR Land Rover has today announced 4,500 job losses.

It is a major blow to Coventry, Solihull and the West Midlands, with tens of thousands of other jobs in the supply chain.

The jobs will be shed ‘globally’, but many are expected to come in our region, the Coventry-based company announced.

It is part of a £2.5billion savings programme over an initial 18 months and beyond.

The company announced today its “next phase of a major transformation plan to lay the foundations for long-term sustainable profitable growth”.

It said the measures would create a “leaner, more resilient organisation; reducing global workforce by around 4,500 people. This is in addition to 1,500 people who left the business in 2018.”

There will be more job losses. - They haven't addressed the basic problem that they're over producing. :clown:

Sadly, the answers to this company's problems are so simple, but I doubt anyone from the managerial team has the gonads to grasp the nettle that is really causing them grief.
