The supermarket that unintentionally may have infected thousands of people with a pig virus which causes and neurological problems has been identified as Tesco
Researchers at Public Health England (PHE) assessed the shopping habits of 60 people infected with hepatitis E, or HEV, and found that the consumption of ham and sausages from one store, identified originally only as “Supermarket X”, was a recurring feature.
PHE has been under pressure to reveal the identity of ‘Supermarket X’ for days, initially saying only that the “association with the supermarket does not infer any blame”.
On Wednesday PHE revealed to HuffPost UK that Tesco was ‘Supermarket X’.
Dr Jenny Harries, from PHE, said: “The risk to public health in England from hepatitis E infection is low, it is usually a mild, self-limiting illness which most people will clear without any symptoms.
“Tesco was not named in our study because we attach no fault to the company."

Tesco wasn't named because it will hurt their profits!

One of the broadsheets (I think it was The Telegraph) identified them last weekend. Tesco declined to comment, other than to say the research was 6 years old!

Are they going to pay into the NHS for tests to be done on its customers to see who has got this infection as I think they should be held accountable for the cost.

They don't even pay taxes!

It would be interesting if anyone could actually prove that eating this infected meat from Tesco has actually made them ill. My bet is that nothing can be proven, at the moment, but this might well change now people are aware.
Mind you, I guess if it looked like illnesses were going to be proven to be from their meat they'd hang their hat on the "You didn't cook it properly, as per our instructions," argument.
The consumer can't win.

Is that because Barclays and a group of banks own Tesco plc.

I believe it's because - like the banks - they have a hundred overseas subsidiaries through which they can route profits and so avoid paying any tax in the UK.
The twenty biggest companies in the UK don't pay a single penny in income or corporation tax.

I'm sorry, but I'm going to support the companies on their tax stance.
OK, I know what they do might not be moral, but they do pay all that they are legally obliged to pay, and that is down to the government of the day not closing all the 'loop holes'.
Companies could be forced to pay much more in taxes if the government chose to make them. Whether those companies would then move out of the UK is another matter.
