A historic Coventry street - which survived the Blitz - has been blighted by poorly-laid Tarmac

Cobbles along Bayley Lane, one of the city’s oldest and most iconic streets, have been removed and replaced by unsightly black Tarmac.

Some members of the public today branded the works “ugly” and called for the cobbles to be reinstalled.

The Telegraph understands that the Tarmac is temporary but that there is no immediate planned date for the cobbles to be relaid.

One member of the public said: “This is one of Coventry’s most beautiful and historic streets and this badly-laid Tarmac ruins it. The original cobbles should have been re-laid.

“It just looks ugly now.”

The work was conducted by infrastructure giant Amey on behalf of Severn Trent Water.

A spokesman said that because of weather conditions, it had not been possible to re-lay the cobbles.

They told the Telegraph: “The cobbles are going back in and it is temporary for the tarmac.

“They will be in place in the next few weeks.

“All the original cobbles will be put in, we are waiting for a date to get the road closed to replace them.”

Bayley Lane is thought to follow the line of the outer ditch of the former Coventry Castle, founded by the Earls of Chester between 1088 and 1147.

The historic road was occupied from as early as the 12th century.

We need to bring back the clerk of works. It'd stop all these poor repairs.

The council don't supervise any work even when it's for them but in this case it's being paid for by Severn Trent Water.

I remember when the bus lane was laid in the Butts Radial Relief Spur and it was the wrong coloured tarmac, the whole lot had to be dug up again and relaid. :clown:
