Big rise in children having teeth removed in hospital

Thu Feb 09, 2017 1:27 pm

More than 160 kids were admitted to hospital for extractions in 2015/16 - a 60 per cent rise on the previous year

The number of Coventry children having their teeth taken out in hospital has risen to its highest level in six years.

Figures obtained by the Telegraph show that between 2015 and 2016, 164 children from the Coventry and Rugby Clinical Commissioning Group area were admitted to hospital for extractions.

That’s a 60 per cent increase from 2010 when there were 103 hospital admissions for extractions - ranging from a single tooth to full mouth clearances. In 2014/15 the figure was 155.

North Warwickshire has also seen a six year high in the number of children requiring hospital admission for tooth extractions.

In 2015/2016, 70 children were admitted to hospital, up from 26 in the year before.

In South Warwickshire, the number of children being admitted to hospital has doubled, with 41 children having their teeth removed at hospital between 2015 and 2016, compared to 21 in the 12 months prior.

The Telegraph has contacted Public Health England, the British Dental Association and dentists to comment on why the figures are rising.
