Bodies of two children and a man discovered in Hinckley home

Thu Nov 03, 2016 1:00 am

A major investigation is underway after the bodies of two children and a man were found at a home in Hinckley.

Officers called to the semi-detached house in Welwyn Road at around 9.30pm last night (Tuesday, November 1) in response to calls from residents who had reported hearing a disturbance in a property in the street.

Negotiators and other specialist officers were deployed to the scene where contact was made with a man and a woman in the house.

Then, in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, November 2) a woman, who was found to have been injured, was taken to hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

Police gained access to the house and a man was found in the property but was pronounced dead at the scene.

During a search of the house, the bodies of two children were also found.

Detectives have not revealed the names or ages of any of the people involved.

Detailed forensic examinations are underway at the house, as are house-to-house enquiries in Welwyn Road.

At the time of publication, the street remained cordoned off at its junction with both Glebe Road and Trevor Road and is likely to remain so for some time yet.

Police say it is not yet known how the man and the two children died but, at this stage, they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

Detective Chief Supt David Sandall, Head of Leicestershire Police's Crime and Intelligence Directorate, said: "A number of enquiries are now underway to understand what caused the three deaths, and the circumstances surrounding the events of last night in the house. Whilst we are not, at this stage, looking for anyone in connection with what happened, we would like to hear from anyone who may have information for us.

"Police officers and other specialist units will remain in the area in order to carry out necessary enquiries."

Screams from Hinckley home where family found dead mistaken for Halloween antics

Screams from the house where a man and his two children were found dead were mistaken for Halloween shenanigans by a neighbour.

David Stokes and his sons Adam, 11, and five-year-old Matthew, were found dead inside the house in Welwyn Road, Hinckley yesterday after a man and woman were barricaded inside overnight.

His wife Sally, 44, the boys’ mother, fled the house with serious injuries and is in a stable condition in hospital.

Jonathan Crozier, 47, whose home backs onto the family home where the bodies were found, told the Leicester Mercury how he heard a woman’s cries at about 9.30pm on Tuesday.

He said: “I was working in the back and I heard screams.

“At first I thought it was just ‘messing about’ because it was Halloween the night before.

“When I heard them again, these were woman’s screams, it got my attention and made me go to the window.

“I saw somebody in the garden, but I couldn’t say if it was a man or a woman because the security lights were shining directly at me.

“But whoever it was ran back into the house.

“Then the lights from the neighbours went on and they came out to see what was going on.

“At the same time all the lights in the other (Stokes) house went out.

“It was so bizarre, but I knew something bad had happened.”

About 50 minutes later the police arrived at Mr Crozier’s home asking him for information.

“At first the police didn’t know where the screams were coming from,” he said. “They’d had reports but couldn’t find the house.”

Eventually, officers traced the commotion to Welwyn Road.

“They came back at 4am to get a statement, Mr Crozier added. “I don’t know what else to say about it. It’s shocking.”

Trained negotiators were called to the scene and the injured Mrs Stokes came out of the house in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Police then went into the house and found Mr Stokes and the two boys.

Detectives have said they are not “at this stage” looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

More than 400 people attended a candlelit vigil at the nearby St Peter’s Church where a brief service was held to allow shocked residents to pay their respects.

Candles have been placed around the church in the surrounding gardens as the local community mourned the deaths.

A truly sad case.

I wonder how the mother will ever be able to pick up the pieces of her life?

RIP the little ones.
