Reports of problems at checkouts across Coventry and Warks

Asda stores have been hit by a till and card machine breakdown nationwide.

Customers reported being unable to make card payments, with long queues building up at stores across the country after the national breakdown.

One source told the Telegraph’s sister paper, The Mirror, that he had been told the system glitch was due to the clocks going back. He said: “This has led to long queues at the cash point and customers abandoning their shopping at the checkouts.”

ASDA have suggested the problems have now been rectified and stores are returning to normal.

...the system glitch was due to the clocks going back.

If that is the case, it doesn't say much for their IT support.

Doesn't this highlight the problems with a 'cashless' society?

I only use a card if buying off the internet. If buying elsewhere I use cash. Admittedly, this has caused me the odd problem with the 'money laundering' rules being applied over zealously. But, we've never gone hungry because an IT system has failed!
