Labour Coun Rachel Lancaster said the "out of control" teenagers tried to set fire to her husband's clothes during the assault
A couple were attacked by “out of control” teenagers after they tried to stop the youths throwing rocks at cars.
Rachel Lancaster said a chunk of her hair was pulled out and one of the group tried to set fire to her husband’s clothes with a lighter during the broad daylight attack on Sunday afternoon.
Police were called to the incident, near to Wentworth Drive Park, after Mrs Lancaster’s husband was set upon outside the family home after asking the youngsters to stop pelting cars with rocks.
Mrs Lancaster, a Coventry councillor for Holbrooks, said she went outside after the teenagers started to throw bottles at her husband and tried to set light his shirt.
She said: “I will be pressing charges for assault. It was quite a vicious attack and I had a great big chunk of my hair pulled out.
“There was a group of kids out the front and they were picking up stones and throwing them at the cars. My husband told them to stop it.
“They surrounded him and started to throw plastic bottles at him and they tried to set light to his shirt.
“They were out of control f-ing and blinding and swearing in my husband’s face.”
Coun Lancaster said the attackers then moved away but returned a few moments later as they suspected a younger boy in the area had told the councillor their names.
She said one of the attackers turned on her after she had intervened to protect a youngster.
Coun Lancaster said: “I told the younger lad to wait in my house and I stood at the end of my drive and one of them attacked me because he could not get to the other lad. He was about 15 or 16-years-old.
“He pulled my sunglasses off my head and a chunk of my hair out and threw them to the floor.
“I could not sleep that night because we thought they might come back.”
A spokesman for West Midlands Police said the force was investigating a report of an assault and enquiries were ongoing.
He added: “The victim was approached by a young male who got into a verbal argument with her over stones being thrown.
“He pulled the victim’s hair before running off.”
