A man has been charged with running away from a crash in Coventry and then assaulting police officers who were trying to make an arrest.

Joe Hetherington was arrested after a black Vauxhall Corsa ploughed in to two parked cars in Alfall Road, Stoke Heath, on Sunday evening.

The collision left the bonnet of the Corsa smashed to bits and a telegraph pole in the street dislodged.

Police , fire crews and paramedics were all called with the latter taking a 23-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the Corsa, to hospital with a broken ankle.

Hetherington, aged 25, of Uplands, Stoke , was taken in to police custody for questioning and has now been charged with assaulting an officer with intent of resisting arrest, obstruction of an officer in the execution of their duty, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and driving without a licence or insurance.

He is due to appear at Coventry Magistrates’ Court on September 22.
