Coventry and Warwickshire has been named as one of the UK’s lottery jackpot hotspots.
In total, 529 top tier prizes of at least £50,000 have been banked by local players, including Ian Dunn and Karen McDougall who scooped £1m on a National Lottery Scratchcard in October.
Ian Dunn had only popped to his local shop, Matthew Convenience Store in Bromleigh Drive, Stoke, to pick up a few items following his shift at Jaguar Land Rover and bought the scratchcard on impulse.
He said at the time: “I waited until I got home to scratch the card and then just stared at it in disbelief.
“I said ‘someone better double check this’ and handed it to Karen.
“We sat up all night waiting until we could call The National Lottery, wondering if this was really happening and didn’t get a wink of sleep.”
The couple jetted off to Las Vegas to celebrate, and have now used their new-found wealth to leave their jobs and take over Wallace Sandwich Shop in Wallace Road, Keresley.
To celebrate their new venture and the region’s top lottery ranking, they are giving away free National Lottery tickets.
The first 100 customers spending £5 or more on food and drink from the shop on Friday, May 20, will receive a free Lucky Dip for the Lotto draw the following night.
Ian said: “The National Lottery has given us the opportunity to start our own business and we are so excited to be part of these latest celebrations in the city.”
