Conservative inroads have been made at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council but Labour retain control over the Town Hall.

The Tories swiped seats from Labour in Galley Common, Arbury and Slough, bringing their total number of councillors to seven.

But Labour still hold the majority with 25 out of 34, with the Conservatives becoming the largest opposition and the Green Party holding onto its seat in Weddington.

Councillor Dennis Harvey, leader of the Labour group at the Town Hall, said: "Four years ago was one of our highs so to keep at that was a tall order, we have lost three seats , which were Conservative seats before we took them four years ago.

"We are obviously upset to lose three seats and two good councillors, but we still have control over the Town Hall and we have been given this mandate from the electorate to carry on."

But Marcus Jones, Nuneaton's Conservative MP, told the News the fact that his party has doubled its presence at the local authority shows that people want a change and they will be pushing the controlling Labour group.

"We are delighted to take our number of councillors from three to seven, and we are clearly now the largest opposition and now it is really important that we hold Labour at the Town Hall to account."

Georgina Daffern, who is 20-years-old, became the youngest councillor elected on the night, as the new Labour Heath ward representative.

The final result, which was for Weddington, was announced at 1.30am.
