The victim suffered blisters to her face following the attack at her house in Coventry
A young Coventry woman was left in agony, with steam coming from her hair and blistering to the side of her face, after her ex-boyfriend threw scalding liquid over her.
But despite his potentially disfiguring attack after breaking into her home, Michael Gadsby was charged only with assaulting her causing actual bodily harm.
And after pleading guilty to the charge, Gadsby, aged 22, of Borough Way, Nuneaton, was jailed for just 36 weeks by a judge at Warwick Crown Court.
The court heard Gadsby had entered his plea on the basis that he had caused the injuries by throwing a mug of hot liquid at her – although she had said he had poured a boiling kettle over her.
Jailing Gadsby, Recorder Rochford told him: “What you did was to enter her home when she was out and make yourself a cup of tea; and then when she came back throw that mug of over her – and it was very hot.
“She suffered a nasty injury. Anybody knows how painful a scald is, even from a small splash, and to cause a scald by having a cup of tea thrown over someone is a very serious offence.
“She needed powerful morphine painkillers, which is a strong indication of the serious nature of this attack.
“This is against the background of the fact that you had not long before been round there, giving rise to the conviction on your antecedents, and for which you were on bail and subject to a condition not to visit or contact her.
“You were deliberately targeting someone who was a vulnerable victim in her own home. That is somewhere where people are entitled to feel safe.”
