Police believe the man who went overboard from a pleasure cruiser on Ullswater may have been a missing man from Warwickshire.
The coastguard was alerted on Thursday after passengers on the Lady of the Lake saw the man go overboard at Sharrow Bay at 1015 BST.
Tony Thwaites, 62, of Shelfield, Alcester, Warwickshire, has been missing from home since 28 April.
His car, a gold Subaru, has been found nearby in Pooley Bridge.
His family have been informed and are being supported by the police.
Police divers are continuing their search of the lake.
The initial search, which involved rescue boats, a helicopter and divers, stopped due to fading light on Thursday evening.
The coastguard said it was unlikely anyone could survive the low water temperatures overnight.
Police are urging anyone who believes they may have seen or been in contact with Mr Thwaites at any point over the past couple of days to get in touch.
