A man in his 30s died in hospital following the crash involving a lorry.

The driver of the lorry is said to be assisting police with their enquiries.

Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have witnessed the collision.

“This is a tragic event and we are currently following up a number of enquiries. Tollbar Island is a major junction and I know a number of vehicles passed the scene and the occupants have not yet spoken to police.

"I would appeal directly to anyone with any information, to contact us.

“Specialist officers have been appointed to the family who continue to liaise with them at this sad time.”

The collision, which took place at around 6pm on Tuesday night, forced Police to close the westbound A45 between Tollbar Island and the A46 Festival Island.

The closure resulted in several hours of “very heavy stationary traffic in all directions” with traffic on the A45 even stretching back miles to the A4071 at Rugby.

Anyone with information should contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101. Alternatively they can leave information anonymously by calling the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111

No changes planned at Tollbar island roadworks following fatal crash

Transport bosses said today they had no plans to change the lay out at Tollbar island after last night's fatal accident.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: “No changes are being made to the layout of the road as a result of this incident.

“However the scheme is progressing well and we will be introducing some changes next week.

“Throughout the scheme we have ensured that there is adequate provision for pedestrians and cyclists.”

The spokesman added that there was no reason for cyclists to go round the Coventry roundabout, with pedestrian crossings offering a better alternative.

Police name Coventry cyclist killed in Tollbar Island collision

TRIBUTES have been made to the 'well-loved son and brother' who died in a collision on Tollbar Island Tuesday evening (January 6).

Police have named the cyclist as Andrew Wolfindale, 35 years-old from Walsgrave, who was struck by an HGV at around 6pm and died from his injuries in hospital later that evening.

Speaking of their loss, Andrew's family described him as generous, loving, considerate, quiet, conscientious, hard-working and as having integrity.

They added: "He loved the outdoors and cycling in particular.

"He had a rich Christian faith, and will be missed by so many friends."

Officers from the Collision Investigation Unit are now appealing for witnesses to contact them with information.

Sgt Paul Hughes, from the Collision Investigation Unit, said: "We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have witnessed the collision.

"This is a tragic event and we are currently following up a number of enquiries.

"Tollbar Island is a major junction and I know a number of vehicles passed the scene and the occupants have not yet spoken to police.
