Flash floods hit all across Coventry and Warwickshire on Thursday evening causing havoc on the region’s roads during rush hour

The heavens opened at around 4pm and the downpour saw streets flooded and closed off, and police advising drivers only to head on to the roads if necessary.

The drains struggled with the volume of water and debris being washed along the streets with Hen Lane bearing the worst of it in Coventry near to the Ricoh Arena roundabout.

Police officers were called at about 4.50pm after cars were left stranded by the quickly rising water and the road was blocked in both directions.

One poor driver took the brunt of the water and their car had to be towed away after the drains were eventually unblocked and the floodwater had poured away.

Coppers were still at the scene at about 6.30pm clearing the mud and debris off the road.

Over in Foleshill, cars had to take on water flowing along Old Church Road, while there was a shunt on the Coventry Ring Road just before 6pm.

A total of three cars eventually stopped in the outside lane near to junction one while police directed oncoming traffic around the scene.

Over the border in Warwickshire there were major problems in Rugby as a collapsed manhole cover in Lawford Road sparked massive delays heading in to the town.

The road was completely flooded near to the New Street junction and eventually blocked off to traffic in both directions.

The A46 near Warwick didn’t fare any better as flooding affected the carriageway between the Longbridge Island and the A425 Birmingham Road junction.

The slippery surface of the roads also caused trouble on the M42 motorway with an accident at J9 for Curdworth involving a car and a lorry, quickly followed by a collision between J4 and J5 on the northbound side.

Fed-up Foleshill residents call for action after summer deluge leaves their street underwater

Long-suffering neighbours in a Coventry street plagued by flooding have issued a new plea for action after torrential rain left their road underwater.

A summer storm brought chaos once again to Kingfield Road in Foleshill on Thursday night.

Families who have been suffering flash floods for 15 years now say they’ve had enough.

Police turned up on Thursday to block the road off as the water levels in the street quickly rose to around knee level.

Caz Duke, one of the fed-up residents in Kingfield Road, said: “For the last 15 years Kingfield Road has been flooding and we have had constant disputes with the council and Severn Trent.

“About two years ago the road was closed and new drainage was installed, which seemed to help during the summer downpours as this is the only time we seem to flood.

“That was until last year when it happened again and has happened twice now within as many weeks.

“We are aware that our flooding isn’t as severe as some parts of the country but nonetheless something should be done now.

“Last time it flooded a man actually fell down one of the manholes as the lid had blown off with the force of the water.

“Fortunately on Thursday the police turned up and blocked the road, else the water inside the houses would have been much worse with the force of the cars pushing the water inside.”

Homeowners in Kingfield Road have been facing problems with flash flooding for many years with summer storms in each of the past three years affecting homes.

The water not only blocks off the road near to the junction with Marion Road, but also pours in to people's homes as the drainage system failed to cope with the huge volumes of rainwater.
