A mystery noise described as sounding ‘like something out of Independence Day’ has been heard in the skies over Coventry.
As wet and windy weather battered the city, several people have reported hearing the loud droning noise at around 2.45pm.
Reports have come in describing a loud noise in the sky which lasted around one minute and was heard by residents in Whitley, Walsgrave, Stoke and Wyken.
Mitch Wise, 19, from Walsgrave, said the noise was so loud he could hear it inside his house despite all the windows and doors being closed.
He said: “I did think it sounded like something out of Independence Day, that kind of noise.
“I was just in my bedroom when I heard this loud noise outside my house. I looked outside my window, but I couldn’t see anything.
“I saw two guys looking up to the sky outside. It was scary!
“I thought it was thunder at first but it was too long to be that or a jet.
“It was like a loud droning noise that lasted about a minute. I was just confused, I couldn’t work out what it was.
“It was a lot louder than a lorry going past. It was loud with all the windows closed, but when I opened them it was really loud.”
Another reader contacted the Telegraph to say the noise sounded like a hurricane.

Mystery 'Independence Day' noise heard in Coventry thought to be old propeller plane
The mystery surrounding an unearthly noise in the skies above Coventry appears to have been solved.
Residents across a huge swathe of south Coventry reported hearing a loud droning sound in the skies at around 2.30pm on Friday.
The noise, lasted around one minute and was described by one witness as sounding like something out of an alien movie.
However, the source of the noise appears to be something far less futuristic, with a witness explaining the cause was an historic propeller-driven aircraft taking off into strong winds.
Mark, 32, saw and heard the aircraft as he was returning to his home in south Coventry on Friday afternoon.
The dad has a degree in industrial product design, something which gave him a unique insight into the aerodynamic properties and sound qualities of aircraft.
He said: “I believe in aliens, and that kind of thing, but it wasn’t that in Coventry.
“It was an old historic propeller-driven aircraft which was taking off from Coventry airport. I saw it in the sky as I was walking back from the shops near Bishop Ullathorne School.
“The noise is caused by the wind resistance on the propeller as it is going round. The plane was taking off into high wind and that means you are going to get more resistance.
“When they fly into wind like that they are travelling slower so the sound stays around for longer.
“The sound doesn’t sound like an aeroplane, it just sounds like a strong vibration because of the air pressures. If you haven’t heard it before it is understandable that people would not know what it was.
“But I work next to the airport and, living where I live, I have heard it may times before. The wind helps the noise travel further.”
The noise was heard by residents in Whitley, Walsgrave, Stoke and Wyken with one describing it as sounding like a hurricane. However, weather experts have dismissed any meteorological causes.
Mitch Wise, 19, from Walsgrave , said the noise was so loud he could hear it inside his house despite all the windows and doors being closed.
He said: “I did think it sounded like something out of Independence Day, that kind of noise.”
A spokesman for Coventry Airport said there had been ''no unusual activity'' at the Baginton airport.
