Two suspects released on bail after death of Stoke toddler
A man and a woman have been released on police bail after being quizzed about the death of a child in Coventry.
A murder investigation is underway after a two-year-old boy was admitted to University Hospital in Coventry with serious head injuries – but later died.
The toddler was taken to the hospital in Walsgrave at about 1pm on Monday and later transferred to Birmingham Children’s Hospital where he passed away.
Police were alerted to the boy’s admission by hospital staff in Coventry and a 21-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning on suspicion of assault.
At about noon on Tuesday the young boy was pronounced dead at hospital and a 25-year-old woman was subsequently arrested.
Both the man and woman were both questioned by detectives on suspicion of murder and were released last night.
A post-mortem examination, which took place on Wednesday afternoon, was inconclusive and further tests will be carried out to establish a cause of death.
As part of the investigation police cordoned off a house in Richmond Street, Stoke and an officer was on duty.
The local community reacted with shock after hearing that a murder investigation had been launched on their doorsteps.
Toby Ajai, a 20-year-old student at Coventry University who had just moved to Richmond Street, said: “There’s been a policeman outside that house for about two days now. I didn’t know what had happened because I don’t know anyone in this area.
“I didn’t think the street was that bad – I knew something was going on, but I had no idea it was this severe.”
A father who lives a few doors away from the house said: “I had seen the child around. It’s a crisis when it’s in your own street. You never know what’s happening though.”
Richmond Street resident Gianni Sterisior, 20, and his girlfriend Diana Downes, 19, were horrified when they heard about the incident.
Diana said: “It makes me feel sick. I can’t believe it.”
Gianni added: “This is a very quiet street, and I’ve lived here for ten years without any major incidents. I knew something was wrong when I saw a police van yesterday morning, and it was still there when I came home at 5:30pm.”
One resident who lives in the street said: “We just feel quite shocked. It’s not something we expect. This is a very family-orientated street. We got back to the house at about 8pm on Monday and there were CID officers standing outside the house.”
An elderly woman, who lives further down the street, said: “I didn’t know the family because I keep myself to myself. There’s a lot of trouble around here. I’ve seen the family around, but I don’t think they’d been living here very long, maybe about two months.
“This is a bad area, though. I’m terrified to be living on my own here – particularly at night.”

"I am keen to speak to anyone who had contact with him or his family during his very short life, particularly in the days and weeks before he died.
"We have spoken to lots of people as part of the investigation so far, but I'm sure there are others out there who may have information that could help us, and I would urge them to come forward."

Keith Brown GUILTY of murdering his girlfriend's two-year-old son
Keith Brown and Samina Kauser
A Coventry man who was looking after his girlfriend’s two-year-old son has been found guilty of the boy's brutal murder.
Keith Brown, 23, shook Khaleel Hussain to death in October 2013 after his mum Samina Kauser, 25, left him alone with him while she went to buy nappies.
Brown, of Swan Lane, Stoke, had denied murder and during a six week trial at Warwick Crown Court in Leamington he claimed he accidentally ‘dropped’ Khaleel while trying to calm him down.
But jurors didn’t believe him and after just over 10 hours of deliberation they found him guilty of murder.
Kauser, of Richmond Street, Stoke, was found guilty of allowing the death of a child.
Both Brown and Kauser have been remanded into custody ahead of sentencing.
Brown is likely to be sentenced on Tuesday. Kauser will be sentenced at a later date.
At the start of the trial Jonas Hankin QC said: “Mr Brown told Miss Kauser that Khaleel had fallen down the stairs. That was the account he gave to the police.
“14 months later he changed his account completely.
“He now claims that while throwing Khaleel ‘almost to the ceiling’ to stop him crying he ‘got it terribly wrong’, he missed him and that Khaleel landed head first.
“The prosecution case is that Khaleel’s collapse was caused by a very serious brain injury that had been intentionally inflicted by Mr Brown, most probably by shaking Khaleel forcibly and throwing him down on to a soft surface.”
During the case Brown appeared to admit shaking Khaleel to death.
He twice said he shook the youngster under questioning from Mr Hankin, but when asked to confirm it to the jury he denied it again.
