'The Guardian' announces 20p price rise for weekday editions

The Guardian has announced that it is raising the price of its weekday and Saturday editions by 20p from January 12, 2013.



This means that from Monday to Friday the newspaper will cost £1.40, a rise of about 17%, with the Saturday version's price increasing by about 9% from £2.10 to £2.30.

Guardian News & Media's Sunday paper The Observer is to remain at £2.50.

A spokeswoman for Guardian News & Media said: '"We deeply value the loyalty of our readers, but this is a tough market for all newspapers and we believe these are the correct current price points for The Guardian.

"The rise will enable us to continue to invest in the high-quality journalism on which The Guardian's reputation is based. It will also enable us to continue to improve our print products, which will remain the foundation of our organisation for many years to come."

Competitor The Daily Telegraph currently costs £1.20, with the Saturday edition priced at £2, while The Times is £1 on weekdays and £1.50 on a Saturday.

The Independent is £1.20 from Monday to Friday and £1.60 on Saturday.

In October, The Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger denied claims that the paper was considering becoming an online-only publication, following reports that Guardian News & Media wanted to end its print edition and focus on guardian.co.uk.

I suspect other print publications will soon follow suit and drive even more people towards free online editions?
