Motorists can now pay for parking in Nuneaton town centre by using their mobile phone.
A new SMS text payment service has been set up by the borough council to initially be used on three car parks – Regent Street 1 (outside the entrance to the Dunelm Mill store), Regent Street 2 (next to the old Liquid and Envy nightclub) and Justice Walk (opposite the Justice Centre).
A spokesman at the Town Hall said: “Gone are the days of scrambling around for loose coins and asking strangers for change as, for a small charge, people can now simply send a text including the relevant car park code along with the length of time they wish to stay.
“The system also includes reminder and top-up facilities. Setting up the new system is simple and takes just a few minutes.
“People need to register their vehicle along with a credit or debit card online and there is also a smart phone app available.”
Coun Danny Aldington, cabinet member for planning and development, said: “This new pay-by-phone parking system offers convenience and control to users of the car parks. If, as we anticipate, it proves popular then we aim to expand the service.”
