Six injured as car ploughs across pavement in Stratford

A car crashed through pedestrians and coffee-drinkers in Stratford-upon-Avon this afternoon when the driver lost control at a roundabout.



Six people were injured, three seriously, when the black Volkswagen Touran careered through chairs and customers at Costa coffee, sending them flying into the air. The car came to a halt in the window of White Stuff next door.

After the driver lost control on the Bridge Street roundabout shortly after 2:30pm, people were left on the floor, injured and bleeding, as others rushed to their aid and called the emergency services.

Two fire engines, four ambulances, two paramedic cars, two air ambulance helicopters and police rushed to the crash scene at the bottom of Henley Street.

At least two people were trapped in the car for over an hour, eventually freed, they were put on stretcher boards and transported to hospital. Several other people were treated, including shop staff and pedestrians.

Hundreds of people looked on as paramedics treated the injured and firefighters cut them out of the car. They were told to move back because of leaking fuel.

Traffic queues formed around the surrounding main streets in the town after the accident, and Bridge Street was
closed.
