REPORTS that a 49-year-old mother died after being attacked by her pet Alsatian have been ruled out by police.

The woman, named locally as Cassie Smith, was found dead at her home in Donnithorne Avenue, Nuneaton, on Tuesday morning after the alarm had been raised by her daughter.

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “There was a lot of talk on the estate that she had collapsed after being bitten by her dog.

“She was very well known around the area.

“She had an Alsatian and also looked after another dog, a pit bull, which apparently belonged to her son.”

Ms Smith, who is believed to have had five children, was unemployed and lived in a house adjoining the row of shops at Hill Top.

Floral tributes were yesterday left pinned to the front door, including one with the message: “A lovely lady who will not be forgotten.”

After carrying out investigations at the scene, police officers said they were treating the death as “unexplained and not suspicious at this time” .

A statement from Warwickshire Police released yesterday said: “The woman had told a family member that she was feeling unwell the night before her body was found.

“Rumours that she may have been killed by the family dog are unfounded.”

A post mortem is due to be held today to establish the cause of death.

They've pulled the story!

"I knew it must be true, 'cause I read it in the Daily Mail!" - Never let the truth get in the way of a good story!

The Sun had an even more lurid version of the story which was totally fabricated and has also since been withdrawn!
