Tragedy at Atherstone train station

Police investigating the death of a man struck by a train say they are treating is as `non-suspicious'.

The fatality occurred close to Atherstone Railway Station in Long Street, North Warwickshire.

The deceased is believed to be named locally as Paul Baddeley and aged in his 40s. However at the time of going to press, no official details of the man's identity had been released.

British Transport Police confirmed to the Nuneaton News yesterday that there has been a fatality close to the station.

Warwickshire Police were also in attendance at the emergency, which occurred on Saturday night at approximately 8pm, alongside officers from the British Transport Police.

Paramedics were also called out from West Midlands Ambulance Service but there was nothing that could be done to save the Mr Baddeley and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: "BTP officers attended the line near to Atherstone Railway Station in Warwickshire on Saturday, January 14 following a report of a man being struck by a train.

"Officers from BTP and Warwickshire Police attended the incident, which was reported to police at 8.05pm, and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

"Paramedics from the West Midlands Ambulance Service also attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are currently working to establish the man's identity and inform his next of kin.

"A file will be prepared for the coroner."

The train involved was the 1911 hours Crewe to Northampton empty stock service with no passengers on board.

The incident affected London Midlands and Virgin Trains travelling along the route which serves Crewe, Manchester Piccadilly, Stafford, Stoke-on-Trent, Rugeley Trent Valley, Lichfield Trent Valley, Tamworth, Polesworth, Atherstone, Nuneaton, Rugby and London Euston.
