Hermann Schleichert made the honest decision to give the four-figure sum to police in Vienna, despite only having 80 cents (66p) and an empty packet of cigarettes to his name.

"I picked up the envelope and saw there was a bundle of cash inside. All 500-euro notes!," he said. "Not even for a second did I think about keeping the money. That would have been theft."

He had been staying at a homeless shelter and hostel for recovering alcoholics, The AFP reports.

The real owner of the money has since been reunited with the sum, but according to police has yet to thank Schleichert.
