Axe threatens two more Nuneaton town centre stores

Wed Jan 11, 2012 4:40 pm

Mystery surrounds the future of two established stores in Nuneaton town centre which could soon be closing their doors.

Rumours are rife that Mothercare and the Early Learning Centre will be cashing up its tills for good and leaving the town.

The two stores, which are both owned by Mothercare PLC, are believed to be shutting up shop when their leases come to an end.

If the rumours are true then Mothercare will be cashing out some time next month, while the neighbouring Early Learning Centre will shut in April.

A member of the public who did not want to be named, said: "I wanted to make you aware of the fact that two established stores in Nuneaton are closing.

"The Early Learning Centre will close in April and Mothercare in February. Both stores are owned by Mothercare and the leases on them are about to end."

At the time of going to press the Nuneaton News had had no official word from the company's head office whether the two shops were closing or not.

But if the closures are correct it would leave parents and carers without two popular shops which cater for babies, toddlers and children.

This news would be another bitter blow for the town centre after the loss of TJ Hughes last year and also the empty space which used to be Marks and Spencer.

Mothercare is a specialist retailer of products for mothers-to-be, babies and children up to the age of eight. It first opened its first store in 1961 and initially focused on psuhchairs, nursery furniture and maternity clothing.

In June 2007, the group acquired Chelsea Stores Holdings Limited, the owner of the Early Learning Centre (ELC) brand.
