Thu Dec 08, 2011 2:45 pm

Severn Trent is urging customers to avoid clogging up their sewers in the run up to Christmas.

It wants customers to avoid putting fats, oils and greases down the sink after residents in Leamington reported blockages.

The company recently spent £7.8million in the town centre upgrading the Victorian sewer system.

Each year they spent more than £10million cleaning over 700km of sewers which are prone to clogging.

Two out of every five sewer blockages in the Midlands are caused by sanitary products but a fifth are caused by fat, oil and grease.

The worst offenders are items like cleansing wipes, cotton buds and nappies.

I always clean greasy plates with a paper kitchen towel before putting them in the sink. I get a lot fewer sink blockages that way. :geek:
