Commuters were stuck on board a broken down train for more than two hours, forcing both lines between Coventry and Rugby to close.
Virgin Trains said its 05:24 GMT service between Wolverhampton and London Euston developed a fault.
The fault happened at about 06:15 GMT when the train was in the Brandon area.
Virgin said all passengers had alighted by 08:35 GMT and that the train was moved out of the way at 09:55 GMT, allowing both lines to open again.
A spokesman added that the company would be holding a "full investigation" into the incident.
Services run by London Midland were also affected.
Replacement buses ran between Coventry and Rugby for a while and both companies have apologised to anyone affected by the problems experienced.
