Man found critically injured in Nuneaton street dies

Sun Oct 30, 2011 3:54 pm

A 52-year-old man who was found critically injured in a Warwickshire street has died in hospital.

The victim's injuries suggested he had been run over by a vehicle, police said.

Paramedics were called to Burnaby Close, in Nuneaton, at about 00:00 BST on Saturday after receiving a report that a man had fallen from a vehicle.

A 56-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident has been bailed.

Police said the injured man had been taken to the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire with severe head and pelvic injuries, and died on Saturday afternoon.

A police spokeswoman said investigations are continuing and a post-mortem examination is due to take place on Monday in order to establish the cause of his death.

Police appealed for witnesses and also want to hear from anyone who saw anything unusual or suspicious near to the Royal Oak public house, in Stockingford, at about the time of the incident, when it is known the victim caught a taxi.

A Nuneaton taxi driver will stand trial over the death of a man who was found lying in a road yards from his own front door.

Peter Southall, 57, of Edinburgh Road, Nuneaton, has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the incident, which happened in Burnaby Close, Nuneaton, last October.

Police were called in the early hours when 52-year-old Ian Smith was discovered with serious head and internal injuries near his home.

He was taken to University Hospital, Coventry, but died 16 hours later.

Subsequent police enquires revealed he may have been run over by a vehicle.

Mr Smith, known locally as Wobbly, was a former Coventry car worker and avid Sky Blues fan. He lived on his own and had been socialising at a Stockingford pub on the night of the tragedy.

Southall appeared before Nuneaton magistrates yesterday when he was commited, on conditional bail, to Warwick Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on July 26.
