A package of improvements has been unveiled to revitalise Hertford Street in Coventry city centre.

The canopy and paving will be repaired, benches replaced, lighting upgraded, shop fronts improved and the street scene de-cluttered.

Work will start in January and will be completed by the spring, in time for when the city hosts Olympic football.

Coun Linda Bigham (Lab, Longford), cabinet member for city development, said: “Hertford Street is certainly in need of some tender loving care and I think these plans will make a real difference.

“There’s lots to be done and this work will not solve all of the issues, but it’s a great start and I hope it demonstrates our continued commitment to improving the city.”

The scheme complements a £7m investment programme – part funded by the European Regional Development Fund – which includes a new square in Broadgate, improvements to the connection between the Bull Yard and the railway station and a ‘shared space’ in Gosford Street.
