Work has started to expand a Warwick eating disorder unit to cope with more sufferers.
At the moment Woodleigh Beeches is connected to Warwick Hospital, but by next year it was be a unit in its own right, with 15 beds for people seriously ill with conditions like anorexia and bulimia.
State-of-the-art equipment will also be brought in to help reach out to more patients. As well as medical treatment they provide nursing, individual and group therapy, physio and occupational therapy and help with diets.
The centre sees around 100 new referrals every year, with most young girls.
It is now recognised as one of the best centres in the country for bulimia treatment.
Specialist Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Tony Winston says it is vital they meet the increasing demand:
“We’ve not been able to meet the need. This will provide more specialist in-patient treatment. We try and treat as many people at home as possible but for people with the most severe forms in-patient treatment can be life-saving.
“People sometimes think it’s silly young girls who read too many magazines. It’s a very serious psychological condition that can destroy lives.”
