Severn Trent says hosepipe ban 'not needed' this summer

A major water utility says a hosepipe ban in the Midlands and East Midlands will not be necessary this summer.



Severn Trent Water said it was "confident" that water restrictions would not be needed.

Spokesman Martin Kane said: "The situation has been helped by the return to seasonal average rainfall in June and July."

Severn Trent provides water and sewerage services to eight million customers in the UK.

Dry spell

Mr Kane said: "We are pleased to report that we are now confident of maintaining supplies without the need for any water use restrictions this summer.

"Customers really should be applauded for going the extra mile to use water wisely.

"Statistics from the Consumer Council for Water show that householders understand water is a limited resource and want to do their bit to ensure supplies are secure into the future."

Parts of the Midlands had the second driest spring since records began, according to Met Office figures.

In June, the firm said the long dry spell and increased demand had put pressure on resources.
