The council decided last year it was going to sign the route up to the national Bus Adjudication Service as so many cars are using the designated bus lane.

CCTV cameras will officially start recording number plates of people taking the short cut from today – motorists will then get a letter in the post telling them to pay a 60 pound fine which will be halved if they reply and pay-up in time.

The monitoring equipment has been up at the Whittle Arches for the past year to record car traffic and has already caught 1,000 cars using it.

Council bosses have also decided cameras need to be put up on Tile Hill Lane at the junction of the A45 Fletchemstead Highway as people are driving along the bus lane instead of using the set of traffic lights near the Sainburys supermarket.

More cameras could also go up at other locations at a later date.

Councillor Lindsley Harvard, Cabinet Member for City Services said: “Clear signs will be in place to warn motorists of the restrictions and the fact that the bus lanes are being monitored by cameras.

“Motorists who ignore the restrictions and are subsequently fined will only have themselves to blame. We cannot ignore behaviour that is both dangerous and inconsiderate.”
