Police surround two Coventry banks after reports of gunshots

Armed police were called to two Coventry banks this lunchtime over reports of gunshots.

They were also told people could hear people on the roof of either Barclays or TSB on Foleshill Road around midday.

When they got there they evacuated both buildings and conducted a search along with the police helicopter.

Nothing was found so they think it may have been a fault with electrical wiring which may have created the noise.

Inspector Malcolm Prestwich, based at Coventry Central police station, said: “While this turned out be a false alarm it was clearly reported with good intent by people who were understandably concerned by what they heard.

“West Midlands Police treats violent crime very seriously, particularly where firearms are concerned, and public safety is our paramount concern.

“Our officers responded in a professional manner and were stood down once it became clear that this was a false alarm.”
