Pothole repairers did half a job, says Mount Nod man

Mount Nod resident Frank Jones has been left scratching his head after road workers began repairing his potholed street – but left the worst part untouched.

Mr Jones, who lives in Berwick Close, says he has complained to Coventry City Council on several occasions but still nothing is done to repair the giant pothole outside his house.

He said: “The road surface is in a shocking condition and in some places there is no surface left. It is just rubble and sharp stones.

“One thing I don’t understand is that half the close has been resurfaced some time in the past but there is a distinct line where they have stopped right by my house, and they have not come back.

"All other closes around here have been repaired properly and there is no problem there anymore but this half of the road has just been left and I can’t understand why.”

The 74-year-old, who worked for Courtaulds for 30 years until he retired, has lived in the property for almost 40 years.

He says he is worried the rubble will injure someone soon if it is not repaired properly.

“This has been going on for some years now,” he added.

“We call the council and they come to do a patch up job but that lasts just a few weeks and the rubble comes back again.

“There are quite a few elderly people around here and they find it difficult negotiating that part of the road and young children play around here quite regularly.

“One day somebody will fall over and cut themselves badly on the sharp stones.

“And it is having an effect on my car tyres every time I pull out of my drive.”

Mr Jones, a father of one, says other streets in Mount Nod have been resurfaced as part of the council’s plans to mend some of Coventry’s worst potholed roads after the long cold winter took its toll, but says he is baffled that half of Berwick Close has been left untouched.

He added: “It is unsightly and unsafe. It is right outside our house and I can see somebody falling some time soon.

“It is about time it was sorted out once and for all instead of this temporary patch up job we get.”

A spokesman for the city council said inspectors were already aware of pothole issues in the Mount Nod area.

He said workers had been to patch up some of Berwick Close but had not resurfaced the whole street.

He added: “We have carried out an inspection of Berwick Close and other nearby roads in Mount Nod and we will be carrying out some patching work to cover the defects and make the roads safe.

“We will also be considering Berwick Close for a more substantial restructure in the programme for next year.”
