A Coventry statue in the city centre has been pushed from its pedestal and smashed.

The statue, which depicted two figures hugging as a symbol of peace and reconciliation, was at the entrance to University Square.

Police said CCTV footage appeared to show three men damaging the statue and officers would be investigating.

The statue, known as Mother and Child, had been put on display by the Herbert Art Gallery, close to the square.

A spokesman for the art gallery said there had been a few instances of recent anti-social behaviour near the gallery.

He said windows had been smashed and people had been seen drinking nearby, even though the site is located in an alcohol-free zone.

Chf Insp Kerry Blakeman said she was appalled at the mindless nature of the attack.

She said the area is extensively covered through CCTV cameras and police would be studying the footage.

Such a shame. Enjoyed a nice evening at the museum on Saturday with the little fella - part of the "Museums at Night" events held across the country - and was sad to see the damage caused to windows on the 'new' part of the Herbert. And they have replaced the wood where people sat with mud. There was also poster saying that anti-social behaviour in the area would not be tolerated along with "No Skateboarding or similar activities" signs.

The area is covered by CCTV, I hope those responsible are found and made to pay for the damage. :fuming: There is no excuse for wanton vandalism.
