Arsonists are being blamed for starting a huge fire that destroyed the former Crazy Daisy's nightclub and restaurant on the A45 after it became a haven for squatters and thieves.

Police are investigating after the former Crazy Daisy’s nightclub, in London Road between Coventry and Rugby, was gutted in a suspected arson attack.

Five fire engines arrived to tackle the blaze at 4pm on Sunday and were still damping down at the flame-ravaged building near Stretton on Dunsmore yesterday.

The building was The Dun Cow pub before it became a nightclub and was later converted into Goji Chinese restaurant.

But the venue closed three years ago and was derelict.

The tearful owners told the Telegraph they had called police just hours before the fire to say people had broken into the property.

Devastated Jackie Lin and her husband Chi Hong Lin say six police officers and a sniffer dog arrived but refused to go in and search the premises over health and safety fears.

Warwickshire Police confirmed they had attended but said it was “too dangerous” to enter.

Jackie, 38, and her husband believe squatters hid in the roof after the call-out at about 11am when officers discovered a small fire and a fire engine was called to extinguish it.

“My husband and son turned up to check on the place and there were people in there, so they didn’t want to go in.

“We called the police and they came, but for health and safety reasons they didn’t want to check the premises. They didn’t do a thorough check.
