The team behind a £2.8 million programme of improvements at Coventry’s War Memorial Park say that parts of the work have been delayed by bad winter weather.

At the moment there are 30 separate projects ongoing at the city’s premier park, which was first opened more than 80 years ago.

The vast majority of the revamp is on course to be completed on time.

But work to the central pavilion is running nine weeks behind.

There are also short delays to the tennis courts and adventure play area, although both are expected to be finished before the summer holidays.

A spokesman for the city council said: “It is not unusual for such a complex and ambitious project to encounter problems along the way.

“One of which was the prolonged, extreme bad weather over the winter months which caused some delay.

“However, it should be noted the park has remained open to the public throughout with additional events all taking place.

“Even with the delays to these few projects the revamp will be complete and visitors will be able to enjoy a complete summer events programme as planned.

“This project is a priority for the council and we are confident residents will see that it is well worth the wait.”

The work, which begun last August, includes improvements to entrances and footpaths as well as the creation of a new visitor centre and the restoration of rockery gardens and pools.

It was expected to take nine months to finish.
