Revised Friargate plans approved

Revised plans that aim to cut down on traffic around Coventry’s huge Friargate project have been approved by council planners.

The scheme – which would see, among other things, 14 new office blocks, a hotel and a new park built near the train station – has had to be altered because nearby residents were worried about the volume of cars in their neighbourhood.

Proposals also include a dedicated taxi lane, and the ability for drivers to still access the Ring Road from Warwick Road via the city centre.

It’s thought Friargate, which would be built on derelict land, will cost £1.5 billion to complete.

Local councillor Kevin Foster said: “(The developers) have done little to address rat-running issues, particularly through Earlsdon.”

“There clearly needs to be something done around the railway situation, which is in a poor condition – but the project needs to balance the needs of people living in the local area.”

City Council planners have decided to give the new designs outline planning permission.

Shouldn't the council also be making plans to reduce traffic congestion around the Ricoh when CCFC are promoted to the Premier League because that's about as likely as Friargate ever being built?
