Thomas Cutts, of Oldfield Road, Chapelfields, Coventry, was told that he had Perthes Disease last May.
The unusual illness cuts off the blood supply to one of Thomas’s hip joints and leads to its deterioration.
To relieve pain and to aid his recovery Thomas has to use a wheelchair until the condition clears.
It’s meant a dramatic change in his life – with football and gymnastics being replaced with plenty of swimming.
But the St Christopher’s Primary School pupil has learnt to live with his condition – with a little help from his friends.
“He is a very active boy,” mum Debbie Cutts, 38, said. “He doesn’t sit still for very long.
“He’s never been one for watching films or playing on the computer.
“So it’s been a bit odd trying to get him to do the opposite to what he should be doing.
“For him it’s just been really frustrating. He just wants to run around the playground with his mates.
