"Sudden surge of interest" in Royal Wedding

It seems there’s been a sudden surge in interest to hold street parties in Coventry to mark the Royal Wedding.

Until a fortnight ago, there’d been just 14 ‘expressions of interest’ in the city – however, the council have now confirmed they’ve had 23 formal applications to hold bashes.

That compares favourably to 70 applications across the whole of London.

It follows a mistake by Coventry’s officials in February, who’d admitted they’d put incorrect information about street party activities on their website, claiming no music or entertainment would be allowed.

The webpage – which also incorrectly stated all parties would have to end by 9pm – has since been changed.

A City Council spokesman said: “We are fully committed to encouraging local people to hold street parties in celebration of the forthcoming Royal Wedding in April.”

“Our overall aim is clearly to make the organisation of parties as easy, inexpensive and straightforward as possible.”

“We would like to make it clear that there is no ban on people eating food, consuming alcohol or playing music.”

People in Coventry need to have completed an application form for a party by March 14th – there are more details here.

Warwickshire County County say they also need significant notice of any event planned.
