Police oppose alcohol licence at Holbrooks shop

Thu Mar 03, 2011 2:17 am

Police say that a Polish shop owner should not be given a licence to sell alcohol because it would lead to rise in anti-social behaviour.

Piotr Zeno, who owns U Kondzia in Wheelwright Lane, Holbrooks, wants to sell booze between 8am-10.30pm Monday to Saturday.

A licence was previously granted in March 2009 but just four months later it was revoked.

Police say drunken youths became a problem in the area and sales of alcohol to underage youths could be directly linked to the shop.

The new application comes with a promise from Mr Zeno that he will employ extra staff and ban youngsters from using the shop without an accompanying adult after 8pm.

But in a letter to the city council’s licensing and regulatory committee, PC Joanne Bowes, licensing officer for Coventry Police, said that after the first licence was granted Mr Zeno made no effort to change the way the shop was run.

“Conversing with Mr Zeno was very hard to the extent that on some of the visits Mr Zeno would phone his friend to help translate.

“Mr Zeno has not changed a thing since his last application and as a person has not made any efforts to take part in refresher training.
