Nancy Wataku Kiongo, a Kenyan national, was set upon by a group of yobs because she refused to buy cigarettes for them near her home.
She needed hospital treatment and was left badly traumatised by the ordeal which happened near her former flat in Riley Square, Bell Green.
The 50-year-old hospital cleaner was so upset that she moved away from the area.
Friends said she was never the same after the attack.
She was discovered in her new flat in Coundon by a friend on Friday. It is believed the 50-year-old had been dead for a week before her body was discovered.
Members of the city’s African community have paid tribute to Nancy, describing her as a “joyful and talkative person”.
But they say she was not the same after she was beaten up by a group of teenagers who attacked her because she refused to buy them cigarettes.
Pastor Samuel Kinuthia knew Nancy as leader of Gethsemane Global Church Ministries pentecostal church, in Woodway Park, which she used to attend.
He said: “Nancy was great and joyful. She was very active in the church and loved to pray, but after the attack she became a different person. She became a recluse and didn’t talk to people.”
Nancy, who is believed to be a widow, arrived in Coventry three years ago, leaving a brother and two children in Africa.
