The Herald, in Canley, could be knocked down and an old folks’ home built in its place if councillors grant planning permission on Thursday.

In its heyday the boozer at the corner of Canley Road and Sir Henry Parkes Road was one of the busiest in the city and renowned for its quality beers.

It closed last year and has been boarded up ever since.

Plans for a 42-room old people’s home have been submitted to the city council by Ideal Care Homes.

But although a petition supporting the plan is expected from nearby residents, planning officers have recommended the application is refused due to the “poor design” of the building.

In a report, council planners said: “Officers support, in principle, the redevelopment of the site but the current application is considered unacceptable.

“The poor design and layout of the building will have a detrimental impact on the character and visual amenity in a location where the design quality should be high.”

According to the plans a large T-shaped building would be built in the triangle shaped site.

The proposal also includes 12 parking spaces, a drop-off zone and a cycle store area.

But planners recommended the plan be rejected as the design was “inappropriate” for the “landmark” site.
