A Warwickshire fish and chip shop has been hailed as one of the best in the UK – despite being one of the most landlocked in the country.

Alfie Grimshaw, in Kenilworth, represented the Midlands at the National Fish and Chip Awards yesterday, having beaten competition from across the region to make the UK top ten.

The Priory Road chip shop missed out on first place, which went to a chippy based in Bridlington, on the Yorkshire coast.

But despite having been open for just three years – and being based as far from the coast as possible – Alfie Grimshaw was named one of the country’s top three fish and chip shops for sustainably sourcing its fish.

Owner David Blackburn said: “We’ve got a good understanding of sustainable fishing and the sorts of issues that are currently being flagged up by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall in his Fish Fight campaign.

“We like to ensure that with all the fish we have, we know where, when and how it was caught.”

When the shop was crowned the best in the Midlands, David won a trip to Norway to see for himself how fish are sustainably sourced.

To tackle depleting cod stocks, the Kenilworth shop sells a very similar alternative white fish, pollock.

It also sells hake and uses coley in its homemade fish cakes.
