FA to investigate violence at Nuneaton v Telford match

The Football Association (FA) is investigating disorder at a football ground which led to six arrests.



Five males were bailed on disorder offences after Nuneaton Town Football Club's home match against AFC Telford United on Monday. One was released with no further action.

The FA said it was looking into what happened, but that it understood most of the trouble was outside the ground.

Telford fans said some of them were hurt by things thrown by rival fans.

One Telford fan, 19-year-old Ross Crowson, suffered a lump to his head.

He said bottles, paint cans, tyres and glass were thrown at them as they left the ground at Liberty Way after the goalless draw.

"I'm a bit shaken up and I just can't believe it," he said.

Rob Palin, who organises away travel for Telford fans, said: "Some of the people who got to the coach first were forced to effectively lie down on the floor while the coaches was stoned, bricked - to avoid the onslaught that was coming from the so-called Nuneaton fans."

Warwickshire Police said the five males, aged between 15 and 40, had been bailed as inquiries continued and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

"The force helicopter was used to video people during the incident and officers are checking various sources of CCTV footage obtained from around the area to help identify those involved," a police spokeswoman said.

Nuneaton Town FC said it was "saddened" by the events and was also investigating.

The club added anyone identified as being involved in the disorder would be banned from the ground.
