Coventry is expected to see a huge economic boost from Sky Blues' promotion to the Premier League.

It's set to bring benefits to the city and wider region across hospitality, retail and tourism, with Premier League fixtures placing Coventry on a global stage, the city council says.

To mark the success of Coventry City Football Club in re-entering top-flight football after 25 years, it has been granted Honorary Freedom of the City. A proposal to confer the honour was approved unanimously by councillors of all parties this week.

Coventry council leader George Duggins ( Labour, Longford) said the 2025/2026 season "was probably the best football that I've seen since I've been watching the Sky Blues" and added: "The real impact is yet to be felt in terms of economic wellbeing for the city and the opportunities this opens up generally, as well as for the local economy, and in particular, wards like mine in Longford, and in the north of the city [near the club's ground at the CBS Arena]."

Cllr Duggins hoped for even bigger wins in the future, concluding: "We look forward to next season. I don't believe we should look forward with trepidation. I think Coventry City will stay up there comfortably and then after that, we'll win the Premier League in five years."

Deputy Leader Lynnette Kelly (Lab, Earlsdon ), who is also the Cabinet member for jobs and regeneration, said: "It's wonderful for the city to have premiership football. The difference it will make is amazing.

"There will be students who choose to come to our universities because we've got premiership football. There'll be companies that have never heard of Coventry but know the name now and think that might be a good place to invest, that might be a place to start a new factory. It raises awareness of the city across the world because the premiership is the most popular league in the world. It's watched everywhere."

Reform group leader Cllr Jackie Gardiner (Sherbourne) said: "We are a city forged by resilience. The beautiful city of today has risen like a phoenix from the ashes, over and over through the ages.

"And now the club too has emerged like a phoenix from the ashes, to the glories of the Premier League and, in so doing, has shown the very essence of what it means to be a Coventrian. To overcome great adversity, to rebuild and to shine. We are delighted to support conferring the honorary title of the Freedom of the City to Coventry City Football Club."

We heard exactly the same claims after the 1987 FA Cup victory.

What we actually got was an unprecedented crime wave and massive economic decline.

I'm expecting the same thing again!
