They have not been working for some time

Broken lifts at Nuneaton's biggest shopping centre car park are at the centre of a huge row. Locals have reported to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council that they are not working.

But the borough council said, in a statement on its page on Facebook, that the broken lifts were not its responsibility. Instead, the Town Hall urged people to contact management at the shopping centre.

This prompted a backlash from residents, who urged the council to help their cause. "Aren't councillors meant to represent their constituents and help them? Surely it wouldn't hurt you/ them to contact Ropewalk as well," one social media user wrote.

Another posted: "What a cop out," while another said: "But you own the car park and must have a responsibility for the safety of users of the car park."

"People are coming to you as it’s the main accessible route to the car parks that you receive the revenue for," posted another local. "Take some accountability instead of the usual “not my department” response that we’ve come to expect from local councils.

The borough council owns the land that the shopping centre sits on. The multi-storey car park is also council owned.

CoventryLive approached the Town Hall to see if it would make representations to the shopping centre management on behalf of residents. In a statement, a council spokesperson said: "As the lifts are owned and managed by the Ropewalk, the council is not planning on making any representations to the owners in order to get the lifts fixed. Any queries should be directed to the Ropewalk management team."

We have contacted the Ropewalk Shopping Centre about the lifts and have yet to receive a response.
