Staff 'very shaken' by 'threats' from shoplifter at Coventry Tesco shop

A Tesco store in Coventry was closed temporarily after an 'abusive' shoplifter reportedly threatened staff as he left with a clutch of stolen goods. Staff and shoppers at the Tesco Express in Jubilee Crescent, Radford, were left shocked when the episode unfolded on Thursday (12) morning.

A man, understood to be a worker at the store, said the shop was closed 'for the well-being of the team that were at work' after they dealt with what he described as 'a significant incident'. "No one was harmed but the team were very shaken," he said.

"It wasn’t an armed incident in this case just to clarify, but nonetheless, it wasn’t a good experience to have. The colleagues in store acted very professionally all the same, credit to them. I wanted to say thank you for the concern and well wishes we have received on behalf of me and the team in store."

West Midlands Police confirmed it was called to the scene. "We were called to Jubilee Crescent, Coventry after a man was reported to have stolen items from a shop," a spokesman said. "We are now carrying out further enquiries."

A Tesco spokesperson said: "Our Express store on Jubilee Crescent in Coventry is open as usual after a brief closure on Thursday the 12th of October."
