A three-day siege has been brought to an end in Coventry. A man, 50, had reportedly barricaded himself into a thirteenth-floor flat in Pioneer House, Hillfields on Friday (January 6).

Negotiators were called in and officers have now detained the man under the Mental Health Act. Several residents from the same floor were temporarily relocated while police dealt with the situation.

Police are understood to have resolved the matter at around 5pm on Monday (January 9). Nobody was harmed in the incident.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “The siege in Coventry has been brought to a safe end this afternoon after force negotiators persuaded the man to hand himself in. The 50-year-old had barricaded himself into the property on Friday.

“No one was harmed and we have now re-detained the man under the Mental Health Act. Thanks to everyone for their patience while we managed the situation.

Supt Ronan Tyrer, of Coventry Police, added: “We are incredibly grateful to the local people affected by this for their patience, especially those who were temporarily relocated while we worked to bring about a safe conclusion. We want to reassure the community that investigations are being carried out and we are liaising with mental health services on this matter.”
