An action plan is in place
Canal boats have been left stuck in the canal stretch in Coventry due to a Nuneaton pump supply 'running dry'. There were reports of boats being unable to leave the Canal Basin earlier in the week.
Claims were made that this was as a result of an issue in neighbouring Nuneaton. CoventryLive contacted the Canal and River Trust about the situation and a spokesman explained that they keep the Coventry Canal topped up with water from Griff Brook in the Wembrook area of Nuneaton.
"Due to the lack of rainfall the brook has run dry," the spokesman said. "The pump is still operational but there isn’t any water available to pump."
The spokesman added that a plan of action was now being put in place using another part of the network at Hawkesbury.
"We're planning to open the water valve at Hawkesbury Junction which will allow water from the Oxford Canal flow onto the Coventry Canal," the spokesman added. "We're also diverting water from the River Swift to help with the water supply on the Oxford Canal."
The situation will continue to be monitored and water levels on the Coventry Canal will be checked at the weekend.
